Neighborhood Mathematica—an Atlanta education initiative receives White House funding

Atlanta, GA --  (submitted by Kwanza Fisher)

Neighborhood Mathematica—the radical math education initiative that received $10,000 at the elevator pitch competition of Friday’s White House Urban Entrepreneurship Forum-- is posed to reach over 500 Atlanta students and 10 neighborhoods, and is recruiting more volunteer math coaches. The initiative will dispatch coaches to select Centers of Hope to drill students in grade-level concepts beginning September 19. Trained coaches will coach students for 10 weeks, after which the students will represent their communities in the competition on December 10.

A majority of the participants will be African-American students in grades 1-8—a demographic disproportionately affected by both the achievement gap and the recent cheating scandal. Participants will receive 40 free additional hours of math instruction time throughout the semester.

Individuals interested in serving as a volunteer coach should visit www.youngproactive.org to sign up for coach training.

A timely initiative given the recent education crisis, Neighborhood Mathematica is organized by Atlanta native Kwanza Fisher and receives tax-exempt sponsorship via the fiscal sponsorship of Full Circle Mentoring Agency, Inc. The mission of Neighborhood Mathematica is to promote rigor in mathematics, create a culture of education in communities, and establish a new Atlanta tradition.
