ATLANTA -- Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is getting ready to welcome the world to its new Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal.

Slated for a spring 2012 opening, the 1.2 million square foot terminal will feature 12 gates, eight security checkpoints, 3,500 parking spaces, separate levels for arrivals and departures, and plenty of world-class shopping and dining locations.

What makes the terminal notable is the elimination of the "recheck process" for Atlanta-based passengers, according to aviation general manager Louis Miller.

"Atlanta-bound passengers who arrive at the international terminal will pick up their luggage at the terminal's baggage claim area," Miller said. This means that they will only have to go through immigration and customs inspection once while re-entering the country before exiting the terminal.

The new LEED-certified building will also result in direct and indirect employment for thousands of Georgians, in both its construction and operation.

When it opens, the international terminal will have its own entrance off Interstate 75, Exit 239.
