APS schools to close Dec. 20 to Jan. 5 for Winter Break

ATLANTA – Atlanta Public Schools will close from Dec. 20 to Jan. 5 for winter break.  The last day of classes for schools on the APS traditional school calendar is Friday, Dec. 17.  Classes resume after winter break on Wednesday, Jan. 5.  APS administrative offices will be closed from Wednesday, Dec. 22 until Monday, Jan. 3.

Local Elementary Teacher starts Creative program to end Childhood Obesity

Atlanta, GA--  Ms. Slaughter, 3rd grade teacher from Conley Hills Elementary School in East Point has created a program called M.O.V.E. to introduce students to exercise.  M.O.V.E stands for Motivate-set goals and exercise, Overweight- not where you really want to be, View- read food lables and make healthy choices, Educate-information and awareness.

Everyday this week Ms. Slaughter selected a captain that leads the entire class through a group exercise 3 times a day/5 minutes each. To go along with this activity, the class has also invited community leaders to visit her class and read books on healthy living to her students.

This is great program that Linda Slaughter, last year's Teacher of the year, has started in East point and we commend her.

3rd Annual SouthEast Regional High School Battle of the Bands is HERE!

Atlanta, GA--  Just In Time Music presents the Third Annual Southeast Regional High School Battle of the Bands in Atlanta, Georgia on November 7th  at the James Hallford Stadium, formally Memorial Stadium located at 3789 Memorial College Avenue; Clarkston, Georgia 30021; on the central campus of Georgia Perimeter College.  The gates open at 1:30PM and the Showcase begins at 3:00PM.

Atlanta, GA--  The “Domecoming 2010” event features five APS high school football teams scheduled to compete throughout the day, Saturday, Oct. 23 at the stadium where the Atlanta Falcons play their home games – the Georgia Dome.

Crime Stoppers Atlanta and Atlanta Public Schools to Launch Campus Crime Stoppers

Atlanta, GA--  Atlanta Public Schools, in partnership with Crime Stoppers Atlanta, will launch a new crime fighting program aimed at getting high school students and their parents involved in the crime prevention effort.

The new program encourages students, parents, school-based faculty and staff to proactively report crimes and criminal activity to the Crime Stoppers Atlanta organization through the group’s Web site, by text message or by telephone.  Tipsters have the option of remaining anonymous, and cash rewards are provided to those whose information leads to an arrest and indictment.

Campus Crime Stoppers will be launched at a news conference at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at Douglass High School, 225 H.E.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic School in Hapeville, Named as a 2010 Natl. Blue Ribbon School

Atlanta, GA-- Six Georgia public schools were named 2010 National Blue Ribbon Schools today. "These six schools are outstanding examples of how high expectations and hard work can lead to outstanding student achievement," said State Superintendent of Schools Brad Bryant. "These schools show that, regardless of a school's size, geography or demographics, all students can achieve at high levels."

The No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Schools award distinguishes and honors schools for helping students achieve at very high levels and for making significant progress in closing the achievement gap. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the National Blue Ribbon School award winners this morning.
