Unemployment rate didn't change in December

(WXIA) -- Metro Atlanta's unemployment rate went unchanged last month. The rate was 6.4 in December 2014, the same as it was in November 2014. It was 6.8 percent in December 2013.

Fulton County's December unemployment rate was 7.3 percent.

While the unemployment rate didn't budge, the Atlanta area gained 64,700 jobs last year, the largest December-to-December job growth in nearly 10 years. Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said many of the new positions were in trade and transportation; business services; leisure and hospitality; financial services; manufacturing; education and health care; government; and construction.

Butler said Georgia has been in the top 10 states for job creation every month since October 2012.

Metro Athens had Georgia's lowest December unemployment rate, at 4.9 percent. The Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest, at 8.8 percent.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- The Fulton County Workforce Preparation and Employment System – Workforce Investment Act Board (FCWPES-WIA) will meet Thursday, Jan. 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. The meeting will be held  at the Adamsville Regional Health Center, 3700 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW, Atlanta. 

The FCWPES-WIA Board oversees activities related to providing an environment that supports a skilled and trained workforce and to creating innovative programs that serve the changing needs of employers and the business community.

WIA helps Georgia move toward a comprehensive, customer-focused workforce investment system where job seeker and employer customers alike can access a wide range of workforce-related tools and information needed to manage their work activities. Services are provided through a network of one-stop centers statewide.

Delta gate agent charged with bypassing TSA security

ATLANTA -- The FBI is investigating reports that a Delta Air Lines gate agent boarded several flights without going through TSA security checks, in direct violation of federal law.

According to an indictment, James Crawford is accused of using his employee badge to bypass security and board a Jan. 24 flight from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. He was arrested on the plane before it departed.

Crawford works as a gate agent within the Security Identification Display Area, a restricted area in Atlanta's airport. He has a special badge that gives him access to the area.

On Dec. 26, the Delta Air Lines Ethics and Compliance Office received a tip that Crawford had used his SIDA badge to skip TSA security and board several domestic and international flights.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Fulton County’s Adamsville Career Center will host an onsite recruitment in partnership with Manpower on Wednesday, Jan. 28, from 10 a.m. until 1p.m.

Manpower is seeking experienced forklift operators, general assembly mechanics, truck loaders/unloaders and electronic repair technicians.

The Adamsville Career Center is located at 3700 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive inside the Adamsville Regional Health Center.

The positions are located in the McDonough area.  Recruiters are seeking experienced candidates for all shifts. Salaries will depend on the level of experience of those who qualify for the positions.

Applicants are expected to register prior to attending the recruitment by creating an online account at manpowerjobs.com. A résumé is required with the online registration, and applicants must bring résumés to the Adamsville Career Center recruitment.

(WXIA) -- Drivers in the Atlanta area are asked to avoid the southwest side of Interstate 285 this weekend, as construction crews will complete road projects in the area.

Weekend roadwork will take place on several other stretches of highway and interstate throughout metro Atlanta as well. The rainy weather may delay some projects.

* 1 northbound lane of I-85 will be closed between two miles north of Highway 34 and McCollum-Sharpsburg Road from 8 a.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for sweeping.

Suspect arrested after man shot to death inside big rig

Suspect arrested after man shot to death inside big rig

ATLANTA -- Police have made an arrest after a man was found shot to death inside the cab of a tractor-trailer Thursday morning.

The victim's body was discovered shortly after midnight. The big rig was parked outside a Days Inn in the 2700 block of Forrest Hills Drive in southwest Atlanta.

According to Sgt. Greg Lyon of the Atlanta Police Department, Olubmi Ogunguyi, 35, has been arrested in connection with the shooting. She is charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The name of the victim, said to be in his 40s, has not been released. The shooting is under investigation.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- The South Fulton Career Center will host an onsite recruitment in partnership with Manpower on Wednesday, Jan. 21, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Manpower is seeking data entry specialists.

The South Fulton Career Center is located at 5710 Stonewall Tell Road in College Park. Business attire is required, with no jeans, T-shirts or sneakers allowed.

Candidates will be responsible for a data entry quota of 10,000 keystrokes per hour. They will be entering medical information so accuracy is required. The successful candidate will be accustomed to working in a high volume/ fast-paced environment.
