ATLANTA -- Fulton County Voters can “Vote and Vax” beginning Saturday, October 27, 2012.  Voters can cast their ballots and obtain their annual flu slots as a part of an effort to reduce the risk of flu among citizens.  Vote and Vax primarily targets adults aged 50 or older.

ATLANTA -- According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed non-skin cancer among Georgia women. On October 17, 2012, from 10:00am – 2:00pm, the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness, Division of Women’s Health will rock to “Motown Melodies” at its Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Event at the Adamsville Recreation Center where residents can get a free clinical breast exam, blood pressure checks, glucose and HIV screenings.

“October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time we all can encourage the women we care about to get screened,” states Patrice A. Harris, MD, Director of Fulton County Health Services.  “Early detection is key.”

ATLANTA -- Flu season is around the corner.  Fulton County Health Services encourages everyone to get vaccinated, especially children.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that getting vaccinated is the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. While there are many different flu viruses, the flu vaccine protects against the three main flu strains that research indicates will cause the most illness during the flu season.  The Fulton Department of Health and Wellness is providing flu shots at seven centers from 8:30 am until 4:00 pm. 

Residents can get a flu shot or the nasal mist (2 to 49 years) for $25.  Visa and Master Card (credit and debit), Medicaid, Cigna, United Health care and cash are accepted forms of payment. Flu vaccinations are available at the following health centers:

ATLANTA – 11Alive news reporter Jerry Carnes, a prostate cancer survivor, will be among the honored guests at the free Home Run for Health event in Atlanta on Saturday. Carnes will be joined by former Braves player Pete Smith, the Atlanta Falcons cheerleaders and Freddie the Falcon to encourage men to come out for free health screenings. The screenings include blood pressure and BMI checks, as well as those for prostate cancer. Everyone who receives a screening will receive two free tickets to a Braves game.  

Men are encouraged to bring their children, baseball gloves and ball to enter to win the Biggest Game of Catch, which will begin at 10:15 a.m. The last father-and-son or father-and-daughter team standing will win a Braves season ticket package for 2013. Drawings will be held for other great prizes, like a signed Chipper Jones bat.

Fulton County to Conduct Barrier Sprayings to Increase West Nile Virus Prevention Efforts

FULTON COUNTY -- Fulton County Health Services will begin barrier spraying areas identified as sites where mosquitoes tested positive as carriers of the West Nile Virus. In preparation for the concert at Wolf Creek Amphitheater being held on Saturday, September 1, 2012, Health Services will barrier spray the venue in order to best protect citizens and visitors attending the concert. The spraying will have no adverse effect on the health of concert goers, residents or businesses located in the surrounding area.

Barrier Spraying is considered an adulticide.  The process includes delivering a chemical called Permethrin as a fine mist onto foliage and surrounding vegetation in the affected areas.

Augusta man receives heart transplant at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital

ATLANTA, Ga.  – Augusta resident Darren Bell, who has struggled with congestive heart failure since 2005, received the gift of new life when Piedmont cardiovascular surgeon David Dean, M.D., performed a life-saving heart transplant for Bell on August 3, after months of waiting on the transplant list.

Last November, Bell noticed his symptoms of shortness of breath, swelling and fatigue were getting worse and went to Piedmont’s Advanced Heart Failure Center in Atlanta for a full evaluation.

Fulton County offers free session on managing asthma

As part of its Fulton Asthma Improvement and Reduction Project (F.A.I.R.), Fulton County Health Services will offer a free education session for all concerned residents to help them learn how to identify and manage asthma.  The session will take place on Thursday, August 16, 2012 from 6:00pm – 7:00pm at the Adamsville Regional Health Center located at 3700 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Atlanta, GA 30331.

A licensed Respiratory Therapist will leach attendees how to:

  • Identify signs of an asthma episode
  • Identify asthma triggers
  • Manage asthma episodes
  • How to make your home healthy and
  • Receive asthma medication information

Light refreshments will be served.
