Students participate in sandwich charity

HAPEVILLE, Ga. -- Students at St. John the Evangelist Catholic School are using sandwiches to make some people's day a little brighter.

The children and their parents will prepare over 2,000 sandwiches for families who are aided by the Atlanta Mission. SJE principal Karen Vogtner has a long-standing relationship with the charity, whose goal is "to transform, through Christ, the lives of those facing homelessness."

Students participating in the event will also decorate paper lunch bags to hold the sandwiches, along with fresh fruit and healthy snacks. This annual event allows SJE families the opportunity to put their faith in action by helping people right here in the community.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic School is located at 240 Arnold Street in Hapeville.

Some families have unique traditions that may not be consistent with, what we would call an average Thanksgiving. So, if you’re looking to change-up your routine, check out some of the ideas the “Where U Live” team put together.

More than 2,500 JROTC cadets from 30 metro Atlanta high schools
to participate in fundraising effort.

On Saturday, November 5th and Sunday, November 6th, more than 2,500 cadets representing 30 metro Atlanta high schools’ JROTC programs will take to the street to raise awareness of and contributions for The Empty Stocking Fund, an Atlanta-based, Atlanta-serving non-profit organization that provides gifts to more than 50,000 metro area children living in poverty each year.

“The JROTC Drive is important in several ways,” said Manda Hunt, executive director of The Empty Stocking Fund.  “In addition to increasing visibility and raising contributions for our cause, it encourages students to get involved in their communities by helping others and, in return, hopefully gives them a sense of pride in their contributions.  This is a very important fundraising campaign for a grassroots organization
