Delta Flight Attendants Reject Union; Airline Faces Baggage Fine

ATLANTA -- For more than 80 years, Atlanta-based Delta has basically been a limited union airline.

Its pilots and flight dispatchers are the only ones with union representation.

But Wednesday, it was the Association of Flight Attendants' turn to try and unionize the carrier's 20,000 flight attendants.

It was rejected, but only by a small margin -- 47 percent voted for it. It needed 50 percent plus one vote to pass. The union says it will appeal the final tally and ask for a recount.

The AFA is a strong union, representing more than 50,000 flight attendants at 22 airlines, including United, US Airways and AirTran.

Northwest's 7,000 flight attendants had been represented by the union before the carrier was bought by Delta.

But union voting at Delta is not over.

Next up, 16,000 customer service agents, now casting ballots, with those results due next month.
